Wikipedia - Feng shui (traditional Chinese: 風水; simplified Chinese: 风水; pinyin: fēng shu; fung-shway or sometimes fung-shwee in English) is an ancient Chinese practice believed to utilize the Laws of both heaven (astronomy) and earth (geography) to help one improve life by receiving positive Qi.  The original designation for the discipline is Kan Yu (traditional Chinese: 堪輿; simplified Chinese: 堪舆; pinyin: kānyú; literally: heaven and earth).

The words 'feng shui' literally translate as "wind-water"in English. This is a cultural shorthand taken from the following passage of the Zhangshu (Book of Burial) by Guo Pu of the Jin Dynasty:

Qi rides the wind and scatters, but is retained when encountering water.

Many modern enthusiasts claim that feng shui is the practice of arranging objects (such as furniture) to help people achieve their goals. More traditionally, feng shui is important in choosing a place to live and finding a burial site, along with agricultural planning.

Proponents claim that feng shui has an effect on health, wealth and personal relationships. Critics consider it a pseudoscience, even sorcery.

Kidsnadcash - FENG SHUI – A practice used by some to establish a comfort zone (meaning anything in your emotional or lifestyle which you are used to being positive or negative). It is the first outward step into changing your environment, be it home or office, to reflect your goals. Feng Shui is changing the symbols and energy in your atmosphere  to transform your life into comfort and perfection!

To follow Feng Shui: First list three issues that you want to improve in your life and then start following the Feng Shui Recommendations found in either books or on the internet. If you feel that there are no areas in your life, which need improvement, then focus on your goals and take the steps toward success!

Next you need to know about the BaGua... below is the picture of the bagua and a general nine block chart. (Please note that there are various methods of feng shui, but as you notice, all methods follow the same bagua. The only difference is the direction or method that you apply the BaGua to your living or work space.)

Now that you have seen the bagua, you can start applying the above earth elements and colors to improving your life!

Here are a few of the basic tips in following Western Culture Feng Shui...

Angles & Corners – Protruding sharp angles and corners are considered dangerous, as they produce arrowlike energy that can make people feel irritable, uncomfortable and unsafe.
Try to choose home designs and furniture with rounded corners and more organic lines to assure more safety and comfort.
For existing furniture with sharp corners, drape fabric or a plant over the corners to soften the appearance of them. Or simply turn furniture at a diagonal to minimize the corner’s effects.
Balance protruding angles with softening influences of plants, textiles and lighting. Also Faux painting.
Fill in the corners of a room with items such as lamps, curtains, plants, baskets, screens, art or diagonally placed furniture.

Are there any sharp or dark edges within you? Soften them with forgiveness and compassion. Dissolve any edginess with soft activities such as soaking in a bath, relaxing by a warm fire or taking a quiet walk.

Attics and Basements – These are generally storage areas, that should be well organized. Things kept in these areas should be either useful or loved in some way, if not, they should be disposed of because they keep stagnant energy.
These areas are often a reflection from what you are holding on to from the past. Ask yourself why you are keeping these things. Do the memories strengthen or weaken you?

Bathrooms – The primary function of the bathroom is to cleanse ourselves, from the inside out. In Feng Shui, plumbing is considered a potential threat to the vital Chi (positive energy) circulating through the house. Chi can be pulled down the drains. We do not want to flush our prosperity down the toilet or watch our health go down the drain.
Keep the drains of the tub and sink closed when they are not in use. This can be done using the new (scented drain caps available at various stores). Also keep the lid on the toilet seat closed.
If possible, the toilet should be located where it is not seen from the bathroom door.
Keep the appearance of the bathroom beautiful. You can very quickly lift the chi of a room by implementing a new coat of paint, new towels, art objects or plants.

Bedrooms – Western culture often puts little importance in rest.
Locate bedrooms toward the back of the house, where Chi is more serene.
Dedicate your bedroom to the fuction it is used for, the bed. Try and place active furniture such as desks, exercise equipment, etc… elsewhere or as far from the bed as possible.
The ideal placement of the bed is where you can see an unobstructed view of the door, without placing the bed directly in front of the door. When your bed is located directly in front of the door, put a footboard, trunk, table or seat at the foot of the bed. If your bed has no direct view of the door, place a mirror where it can reflect the door for your view from your bed. Also, windows should not be directly over the bed, as they can cause an unsafe and drafty feeling of discomfort.

Choose your colors carefully when it comes to your bedroom. The best are skin tone colors including creamy beiges, browns, pinks, yellows, red and lavenders. Also chocolate, coral, raspberry, butter cream, burgundy or aubergine. Pure White, black, gray, blue or cool greens can be INCLUDED, but will make the bedroom feel chilly and less inviting.

Art in the bedroom should be serene, romantic and sensual.

The view from your bed first thing in the morning influences the rest of your day. Make it especially pleasing to look at.

The TV should not be located in the bedroom and if it is, it should be housed in a cabinet where it can be closed up when not in use.

There should never be more than one mirror in the bedroom, as it activates Chi’ and can keep the atmosphere in the bedroom, awake all night. Drape mirrors in the bedroom before going to sleep at night, this simple act has been known to cure insomnia.

Check under the bed. The Chi’ of the clutter collecting under the bed is affecting you every night!
